On arrival at this job for UDC (see image right) it wasn't immediately obvious how I was going to get any decent images.  As it turned out with a little fill in flash it worked out pretty well.

Tennis Table University of Nottingham
One of the imges from the Tri - Campus games at the University of Nottingham.  This was a match between China and the UK.  The Chinese player was was probably the best player on Campus, men included and went on the win an amazing game of table tennis.

For many years Mich Stevenson  has been highly involved in regeneration projects in Nottingham, and he was instrumental in the formation of the Lace Market Heritage Trust, to inspire regeneration of projects in the historic Lace Market including the Galleries of Justice and the National Ice Centre.

Mich Stevenson in the Lace MarketMich Stevenson in his officeHis many awards include an OBE in 1998,  an Honorary Freeman of the City of Nottingham in 2005 and a n honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Nottingham in 2010 and is currently one of the main directors on the Sport England Board.

I didn't have much time with Mich, fortunately his office provided plenty to work with photographically,  although the predominant back lighting presented it's own challenges.  I think most photographers like the process and challenge of these assignments;  adhering to a brief, taking account of light, environment,  applying the framework of a style, and working with another person.

MJP has recently been appointed by Google as their Photographer for Derby and the surrounding region.

Google Business Photos meets two fundamental needs;

  • To increase the visibility of local businesses
  • Providing customers with key information to enable them to make informed decisions

Google Business what . . . ?

Google Business Photos are 360 degree photographic interactive tours of business premises.

The big advantage of Google virtual tours and feature photos is the integration into their searches, maps and street view technology.  Google provide the technology and hosting for free which keeps costs low.

The interactive tours can be linked to a website or Facebook page.

Pleased to see Peter in the studio recently, he called in for a business profile photograph for his new venture.  After a number of years working for the BBC he moved to the head of Corporate Relations at University of Derby and is now an independent operator.  There's few around with his skills and credentials so probably better to let Peter introduce his new company . . .

"Peter Gallimore Media, based in Derbyshire, is a company offering bespoke media training and advice to middle and senior management. In a world where 24 hour news networks and newspaper websites want instant responses from your company to their questions."

Did I mention his credentials . . .

Peter Gallimore is a broadcast journalist with more than 40 years experience of the industry. He was Assistant Editor of the prestigious Today programme on Radio Four and its sister programme PM, where he worked with presenters like John Humphrys, Sue McGregor and James Naughtie. He was also one of the founding editors of BBC Radio Five live.

. . .apart from that he's a really nice guy too.

Screen Arts Studio

Forget about the pessimism in the national media.  Here is new venture from two incredibly talented individuals that will drive the regions creative industry sector onwards and upwards. Their workshops will enable local talented creatives to compete at a national level in the film and TV industry.

Screen Arts Studio offers directors, actors and artists opportunities to explore, develop and deepen their work through practical workshops.

Christine and Guy's industry experience and insider knowledge is sure to make this a great success.

They are launching with a series of one-day workshops for actors and directors looking to learn more about the art of creating compelling and memorable performances for screen. Workshops  use practical hands-on teaching methods to allow participants to experience and develop technique in a supportive environment.

We had a great afternoon in the studio doing their shoot, one of the best parts of my job is having the opportunity to meet so many interesting people.

Tom at QUAD DerbyHere are a couple of photographs of Tom Craig shot for the front cover of this months Balance magazine.   Balance is national diabetes magazine and ran an article on Tom's film  Argon Green.  Thanks to QUAD for allowing us to use there building.  This allowed me the opportunity to try a couple of different background contexts.

Filming is two thirds complete and I believe Tom is close to getting the funding he needs to complete the rest.  You can get involved by visiting the Argon Green crowd funding site

Tom Craig at QUAD film auditorium

There are two galleries from the filming  at Calke Abbey and the Gielgud Academy

The one to left was shot by balancing the speedlight with the natural light, a  little tricky because the light was coming from behind and 90 degrees from the left. Not ideal however the abstract background swayed by positioning of Tom.

The shot below was lit by bouncing the speedlight from above and to the right.

We do things differently . . .

Annual DNCC dinner

. . .  a claim used too liberally perhaps?  At Matthew Jones Photography we provide great quality photography and we produce imagery that is different.   Here are a couple of images that you probably won't see from any other photographer.  Just one of many reasons for you to get in touch if you are looking for a photographer.

The DNCC Annual Dinner

Many photographers including myself like to work with natural daylight.  This isn't always an option so when I'm shooting indoors I use a Cannon Speedlight 580EX II.

Using a flash mounted on the camera adds an additional level of complexity.  I recommend avoiding using direct flash.  With a bit of practice bouncing the flash and trying different exposure compensation settings you can achieve pretty good lighting.  It can be a little hit and miss at first but the more you practice the luckier you tend to get.

The Tomato Genome Sequencing Project

I not sure what happens to make some people achieve great things, but I was happy to meet to two such people recently.  Dr Graham Seymour and Dr Gerard Bishop are two of the UK's leading  plant technology researches.  There are many remarkable aspects to the project, not the least being the knowledge exchange and  contribution of several countries leading to the successful outcome.

Dr Graham Seymour works for the University of Nottingham in the School of Biosciences Nottingham University.
